INCLUSIVE VISTIS

Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre is available to all users regardless of ability.

At the front of the building, 8 parking bays are allocated to customers who have Disabled stickers allowing them to park. All Staff are expected to inform the DM if they see unauthorised customers using these spaces. The DM will then place the appropriate letter onto the windscreen of the vehicle or speak to the customer about moving to a suitable location.

At any time a member or PAYG customer may need help in accessing the building from the car park. All Staff are expected to help unless it involves Manual Handling and they are exempt due to injury or pregnancy.

Each staff member is responsible in assisting any person who may have a disability in their own area/department if asked to do so by the person or helper in question. If unable to help, the staff member must inform the DM so that alternative help can be found.

There are different categories of disabilities. They are as follows;

  • A person who has an intellectual disability
  • A person who is a wheel chair user or who has a physical disability.
  • A person who has a visual impairment.
  • A person who has a hearing impairment

The Reception desk has a lower section for face to face contact with wheelchair users. There is also an induction loop for those customers with hearing impediments. The receptionist on duty is expected to point out the availability of the lift and to be able to verbally direct anyone to 1 of the 4 changing rooms designed for disabled customers. All staff should be able to point out that Braille signage can be found by all doors for use by visually impaired customers.

There are 6 disabled toilets, 2 upstairs and 4 with shower facilities downstairs. All have emergency cords which are linked to the reception desk. All staff needs to be able to respond to these and help if needed.

Poolside staff should be aware they may be requested to make the hoist chair available to customers in the Village Disabled Changing Rooms, and to help with entry and exit into the pools, both by hoist or by steps. Floatation aids may be needed for certain customers depending on the activity they wish to undertake.

Gym staffs need to be aware of how to alter the Hand Wheel to accommodate a wheelchair. They also need to be checking that the floors are clear for chairs and visually impaired users so as to limit trip hazards. All equipment in the gym has coloured

CARA: Sport Inclusion Disability Charter

People with disabilities should have every opportunity to be active within their local communities. Coral Leisure Killarney supports this Charter, developed through consultations with people with disabilities, which clearly outlines the five key areas people with disabilities are asking all organisations to consider in making active and healthy lifestyles possible for them.
